It was a smooth flight with Air Malawi to Lilongwe. We stopped first in Blantyre, the commercial hub, before a final short hop (along with the national junior football team) to the capital. The environment was green, the temperature cool, the roads good, and, as we drove in from the airport to Old Town Lilongwe, we felt that we could have been in any first world country. No sign of the poverty which we know exists out there in the villages of Malawi.
We have spent Saturday looking around the city. It is mostly a collection of modern shopping centres, embassies and government buildings. It feels like a showcase and everything is very expensive - U.S. prices. We wonder how representative it is of the rest of the country. Tomorrow we may find out. We will be travelling out of town to Lake Malawi, the country's scenic highlight. We expect to stay a few days there.
