Nearing the end of our first day's trek to visit the hill tribes, we were acutely aware of why the tribes are called hill tribes. They live on the tops of hills. It was quite a climb, made slippery by the rain which seems to arrive several times each day in this rainy season. The reward was an overnight experience of life in the hill tribe village, where the economy centres on rice and fruit harvested from precarious outcrops. No home comforts here. The only electricity comes from solar panels.
As we left the village after our stay, we pondered why we hadn't arrived and left the same way the villagers do - using the road!
